This is a stat that shook me to my core the first time I heard it. Statistically, you are more likely to go out of business the longer you are in business. What?! 

No one dreams of shutting down their business, but the reality is that the odds are against business owners.

People say that the reasons why businesses fail are because of product-market-fit, access to capital, bad timing, etc. 

The truth is that there is only one reason a business fails: because it cannot generate enough sales.

This is almost completely unrelated to the other excuses and stems from a business’ ability to do two things: market and sell.

Entrepreneur, born and raised.

I got an inside look at entrepreneurship early on. My dad was a serial entrepreneur who would go on to open numerous types of small businesses. 

Watching at a young age what it was like to own a business and be your own boss was appealing to me. 

But I also noticed how much stress it put on our family. The ups and downs of the businesses, the unforeseen challenges that come with owning a businesses, and the time required (it’s no 9-5 job, right?).

I just kept thinking how nice it must be and that one day I would be an entrepreneur. But I thought I would be able to side-step the challenges—surely it is easier than my dad made it look, right? 😉

Take off.

I started my first business at age eighteen. It was a company that designed and manufactured custom paintball jerseys and apparel. I was a one-man show as a freshman in college. 

I was working late into the night, trying to preserve funds and do everything myself. I was burning the wick at both ends.

It was fun, but it was extremely difficult to do. I ended up shutting it down for a few years and, oddly enough, picked it back up after I graduated.

The experience was the same.

Ruh-roh.

I got a job working for an ad agency right our of college. Talk about a seamless transition from college to professional life. They’re nearly one in the same.

That was going great until 7 years in I was part of a massive round of lay offs. Oh, and it was at the same time my wife and I found out we were expecting our son, Sterling. (Not named after Roger Sterling)

And it was Christmas time…

Yeah, things got real serious, real fast. What was I going to do?

Hat trick.

I did what any sane person would do—I started three businesses.

Before you say to yourself “that’s crazy”, all three of them took off. It was a vape shop (no, I don’t vape, but it was a gold rush), a company that manufactured e-liquid, and an ad agency.

All three were built using branding, Facebook, and hustle. I tripled my income in less than a year using the marketing and sales tools I had acquired over the years.

The two vape companies ultimately had to be shutdown due to governmental regulations that were eminent, but the ad agency would go on to be one of the fastest growing in the market. We eclipsed traditional agencies we were competing with and soon had a roster that included publicly-traded companies, billion dollar companies, and high tech brands.

A higher purpose.

One of the things that has always been in the back of my mind is that all of the knowledge and skills around branding, marketing, and sales that I have acquired over the years are not easily accessible to small business owners.

To engage with my agency, it requires upfront capital that most small business owners and entrepreneurs just don’t have. And it bothers me that I can’t help them.

In 2019, I had the privilege of attending Tony Robbins’ Business Mastery event. He said something that I will never forget:

"If you have the knowledge that can help someone else, it is your moral obligation to help them."
